A Time for Refection

So, I said I would keep up with this blog and I intend to do so. For now, its just random ranting, but trust me some amazing photography is in the works. I was up last night until 4am working a paper for my marketing class. It took me a while to clear my head in order to write the paper which is why I was up so late. Sometimes you just need to sit relax, gaze out the window and hopefully if the sun is shining take in the rays. I didn't know that clearing my head of some much outside information would be so tough. But, finally...as the night progress I was able to think, I mean actually "THINK" without any other outside distractions floating into my head. Life is so busy right now and I am grateful for that but, I also know that in order to progress I must stay focused.

So this morning...I awoke to the stale smell of coffee and the faint barking of my neighbors dog. I am tired, but I am thankful that I finished my paper. Now, I can enjoy the calm and quiet of a world that is stirring before it begins.

And for as much commotion and dare I say chaos can come from traveling (packing, planning, photographing, writing, editing photos) so too can come the kind of peace and serenity we only dream about. Waking with the sun when on vacation can be as delicious as sleeping in. When you wake to the softness of morning, the day is bound to follow suit. I am longing for a nice vacation. So, until then I find inspiration in writing of one of my favorite authors TS Eliot.

So, over the weekend I found this really cool template for making polaroids. I've always loved polaroids and was very sad when they stopped making the film. So, I was really excited about finding this widget.

To achieve the tone: So, I went into photoshop and applied this vintage effect to the photo first and then pulled it into Polaroid program...and there you have it!

Trip to New York

This past weekend I took my daughter and niece to the Big Apple. It was their first time visiting and we had to cram it all into 2 days but, I definitely think that it was worth it! We got there early about 9am after flying all night from Ca. Our first stop was Central Park, where we walked around for about an 1hr and then took a bike tour of the remanding areas of the park. Next we headed to Harlem where we stayed in cozy hostel for a super cheap rate. It was actually quite nice and included a full kitchen but needless to say we had no time to cook. We stopped on 118th and ate some traditional Jamaican food including curry chicken, plantains and of course rice & peas. After a long rest we woke up early and headed over to battery park to catch the ferry over to Liberty Island. It was quite a treat b/c in all my visits to the big apple I'd never actually been to the statue of Liberty. We got to take numerous of touristy photos at the Island and also got a great view of the city while riding on the ferry. After that we headed back to check out of our room, but what would a trip to NYC be without a Slice of Pie? I'm talking about pizza you guys!!! A big ol slice of cheesy pie. Well, that's it, NYC in a day anyone???

Catching the light...

One of my favorite ways to catch the light in the eyes is by using a small softbox directly under the face, this works great for indoor studio lighting. Outdoors you can achieve the same affect by placing a reflector right under the face with the subject facing the light (not too harsh of sunlight though) This creates amazing catch lights int the eyes. There are other ways to make the eyes pop, but I don't like to do too much post processing b/c I want the eyes to appear as natural as possible.

It's been awhile since my last post, and I am really sorry for not keeping up with my blog. I was actually in training in Denver, CO for my job for 3 weeks with Frontier Airlines...the hotel had an incredibly slow Internet connection and I finally gave up on it. Than I took a nice relaxing trip to Puerto Rico! Well, I am back and will be posting a lot more to make up for lost time. I wanted to share some of the editing I have been practicing lately on the photos taken in PR. Here is one photo where I finally was able to get the eyes to pop much like the photos I've admired of other photographers that use natural light. Let me know what you think. Remember that feeling you got back in high school when you met someone one that you really liked, or as Juno put it someone who is the "cheese in your macaroni"?
Why can't love always feel like that? Somewhere between butterflies in your tummy and feeling like your about to faint?? I remember having a crush on this really cute guy named Brandon and every time I saw him in the hall I started hyperventilating, and I didn't even have asthma, lol. Wasn't that just the greatest feeling in the world, someone should put that in a bottle and sell it. I swear I'd overdose on it.

Today at the airport I had deja vu

Déjà vu also called paramnesia, the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has happened in the near past), although the exact circumstances of the previous encounter are uncertain.

...an odd couple in western attire walking towards me to checking in for flight 222 approached me-just as they approach, I know that I've dream t this before I've stood right here, just like now and these very same people approached me to check in for their flight. I brush off the feeling for a few seconds so that I can greet them and give them their boarding passes. After wards, I stop and ponder, life tells me things in bits and pieces like a puzzle that I must put together but the pieces are never just given to me at one time. One year I may get a few the next year a few more and slowing I see my life come together before my eyes. But, when life tells you something you must follow it. Somethings are just meant to be, while others will never be know matter how hard you try to force the piece. A woman missed her flight today and as I was rebooking her she looked at me and "maybe their was a reason for me missing this flight" I was filled with emotion when she made this comment. I said "you know there is always a reason for everything that happens to us and sometimes we don't find out until must later what that reason is" This passenger was on her way to her grandmothers funeral and arrived past check in time, I so badly wanted to get her on the flight but it was too late and there was nothing I could do. When she made that comment, I knew that there indeed was reason, and maybe the reason was so simple as her telling me her story and allowing me to feel her emotion. I dare not tell her it was to meet me, but just think to myself and smile...I have been inspired today and I think that I will start painting again very soon.

Why Love?

Why is it when you tell someone you love them, they ask you why? Isn't it enough to just be loved? I know that when someone tells me they love me, I am grateful and flattered. I don't need an explanation as to why they love me, its enough for me that their heart is filled with this emotion for me. I appreciate it without any explanation needed! Because sometimes, love cannot be explained. Sometimes, God has put this immense emotion in your heart for someone that you can't help but express this feel that has some how conjured up in your heart for another soul. Its unexplainable, indescribable but very much existent. There are so many that would love to have someone love them. So if you have it, accept it, appreciate it, don't take it for granted, love to be loved!

And let me add this.....sometimes you love someone who doesn't deserve your love. They don't reciprocate it, they don't appreciate it, they use it, mistreat it...you often contemplate and ask yourself why do you love this person who is so unworthy of your love. And that too, goes unanswered. It goes back to the thought that, you can't help who you love. So for those of you being loved, and not reciprocating it, don't believe for a second that it is you who deserves that love. You know what you're doing, you know what you aren't doing that keeps you from being the person who deserves that love. Being loved does not justify your mistreatment.

Wow, what a powerful topic...I was just thinking about love today. I guess it's the that time of year where people like to fall in love. I don't think it's enough just to tell someone you love them you also have to show it...and that should be enough...just feeling that you are loved. But, hearing it nice I have to admit...It's so funny b/c a co-... Read Moreworker of mine who has been dating a man for 4 years is constantly asking him "do you love me" or "tell me you love me" I think to myself girl if you have to ask than maybe he doesn't love you. Love is a very strong emotion and I believe that you know someone loves you just by how it makes your heart feel when you are around them, or away from them for that matter.

Why is it that the minute you stop loving someone, they suddenly realize that they can't live without you and desperately try to convince you to stay? Last year I moved to Sacramento and left behind my boyfriend of four years. It was a hurricane of a relationship and left me emotionally drained followed by a long stint of depression. Since leaving apart of me wonders why I stayed so long. Why I gave him chance after chance only to be let down and crushed time after time.

Yes I do realize the title of this post is "love is in the air"

I so long to be in love and on one hand wonder if I even know what love is, have I ever really been in love...ultimately what is love and can it be defined? My heart is filled with emotions, at many times love but, other times hatred for those that disrespect love. Why do people say that they love you and don't show it? Why is that people love you and don't tell you-shouldn't they be screaming it at the top of their lungs? Why do people feel the need to hurt others? Why do people pretend to love emotions around this time of year...springtime-when people walk around holding hands, kissing and gazing into each others eyes. I want to believe that they are "In Love" I want to hope that they respect love and and the beauty that it brings everyone around them. I want to be a part of it...I want to capture there moments with my camera, timeless kisses from afar. To all the people out their in love please don't hurt the ones you love the damage can last forever, for the heart takes years to heal...my heart is still healing. I have trust issues. I used to fall so easy...so hard, now I hold back because I will always remember the pain. The pain is so fresh, always there to remind me of the consequences of love.

This past weekend I went to Santa Barbara and got a chance to visit their Art Museum. I so miss working at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Museums have always been one of my favorite places to go. There is always something there that inspires me and makes me think about love. I've always thought of museums to be a great place to fall in love, I know that sounds corny, but I'm an artist and hopeless romantic. Somewhere between the walls of paintings, photography & sculpture lies love, waiting for you as you gaze hopelessly from corner to corner. Perhaps someone standing next to you thinking about the same thing you are.

This weekend I went to Venice Beach these two photos are just a few of the many beautiful images that the beach has to offer.
History of the Beach:
Venice is a district in western Los Angeles. It is known for its canals, beaches and circus-like Ocean Front Walk, which features performers, fortune-tellers and vendors. Throughout the summer months, the boardwalk is actively entertaining, and this tradition continues on weekends in the winter. It is a very popular place to enjoy a bike ride, skate boarding or a nice jog.

I took this photo one night while out sight seeing downtown Guadalajara, Mexico. Just a young couple kissing passionately in love. I used my 24-105 canon lens on manual focus along with the help of a tripod and a longer shutter speed, did some minor processing in photoshop, but the colors were always vibrant. I had the opportunity to visit the city of Guadalajara, MX the week of March 1st. Although, I was there on business training for Mexicana Airlines I was able to get out and view the city and all it's beauty. This photo was taken near the center of their downtown Plaza area just as the sun was coming down. The city is very historical and full of churches and old buildings.

Just got home from work, another day at the airport, tonight was very uneventful. Only two flights went out tonight, so lots of downtime. Plenty of time to sit around daydreaming about what I could be doing with my life if I had my goals in proper order. Its really hard juggling being a single mom, artist at heart and stuck in a dead end job. Tonight I fantasized about all the places I plan on going once I get enough time off. First on my list is Costa Rica, then Asia and finally Africa. I want to be inspired....I want to take breath-taking photos and I want to paint exotic pictures. Seems like just a dream sometimes....but I will not stop trying to make it become reality. It's a constant journey though. My major problem is getting depressed and dwelling on the past instead moving on and making things happen. I refuse to get stuck in rut again. This year will be different, not just full of hopes but full of reality. I have a deep longing to fulfill so many dreams that have danced around my head for years. There has to be more to life than going to work everyday, smiling at irrelevant co-workers that chew with their mouths open and fall asleep on the job, hide in corners to make phone calls and surf yahoo on company pcs. Lord please tell me that life exists somewhere out there...beyond picturesque sunsets and cloudy days.

I've recently started following a blog called Shutter Sisters. A blog written by several very inspirational yet everyday women. It gives me hope when I read about women like this. Not your fake plastic surgery celebrities, but real women that are making their dreams happen. Wow, it has been a while since I updated...I keep thinking of more news to add. So, as far as photography goes the last shoot I did was last month with 2 beautiful models from Sacramento. I got to work with Angela the make up artist again (www.angela-renee.com)she wanted to do a beauty shoot to promote for the upcoming wedding season, I had a great time and as usual she was a pleasure to work with. So, finally I made it to the magical kingdom of disneyland:) Yes I know I am a big kid at heart! I had a great time dispite the fact that it rain 2 out of 3 days that I was there I still managed to go on my birthday (2/8) and I had a good time. My favorite ride was the house of terror and the ride that made me scream the loudest was "SCREAMER"!

It's definitely time for me to start back painting again. I recently viewed the work of another artist and was very inspired. Plus my good friend Emma is having a show this month in Atlanta to display her art. I just feel like I need to be doing more painting. I'm going to Mexico at the end of the month and I hope that this trip will inspire me to be more creative. I am going to invest in another lens despite the horrible economy I think that this lens will be a great asset to my collection. It's canon's L series 70-200 4L. I found someone that has one for sale at a great price.

Finally got portable light working!

Finally got my light working!!! After a year of having my Jtl portable light, I finally figured out that it had a short in the cord which explains why every time I took it on location it won't work. So, I ordered another cord which came yesterday and I really want to take it out and do some tests soon. I hope to take it out this weekend, and post some new work! Finally, got a chance to visit SF! On June 8th, I took a trip to SF with make up artist Angela Renee, it was about a 2 hour drive. We arrive at 8am to meet with Reece and models Charlotte & Luna. We had an excellent day of site seeing and shooting around the city. The first stop was near the marina but, there was a Triathalon going on so we couldn't get through to the street we wanted to shoot at. We headed to a nearby area and took scenic shots of both models. After that we drove to the Haight-Ashby area of town and there was a street fair going on, which added more to the story! I photographed both girls in the street and also on the sidewalk areas. The final stop was the marina area again, along the beach and near the bridge. Below is a photo of all of us minus Charlotte who had to leave early.

I did the following shoot in downtown Sac on June 5th. It was my first time working with stylist Reese and models Alice & Crosby. I had a great time. The whole shoot was ad lib and we just went with things! This was my first shoot since moving to Sac, but I am hoping to do another really soon!

New City...new work

Hi All;

As many of you may know I decided to move from Atlanta to Sacramento a few months ago. This was huge move and I am still adjusting to everything. I made the move because I really needed a change of pace, and although I will really miss my life in Atlanta, I believe I made a good decision. Both my sister and mom relocated here a couple of years ago and it is good to be around family (sometimes) once again.

Since moving here, I have started a new job working at a portrait studio in Elk Grove and I hope to once again start my own studio soon. I hope to find a loft or condo in the downtown area that I can use as a live/work space. I have also started to think about doing wedding & family portraits due to Sac having such a small fashion market. However, this will require working very hard to save up for new lens, portable lights, and a better camera...so needless to say it will not happen overnight.

I will be posting new work very soon. I have set up several photo shoots here in Sac and in the San Francisco area in the next few weeks and look forward to sharing more work with all of you. Until then, thank you for all your support!

Men In Motion!

Hi all;

I am working on a photo exhibit of my work entitled "Men In Motion". Please come out and support me in my efforts to create exotic, stunning images of African American men.

New Update: I have decided to put this project on hold due to funding, the sad part is my "sponsor" who came up with the great idea of having me do a photo exhibit..was not "sponsoring" me at all. I won't go into details but, this project is on hold indefinitely and may never happen. Although, I believed in the idea, it can not exist without monetary support. Sad but true...

I'm currently working on a series of photos I call simply cheque..
This series will define what I am best at simplicity! Focus will be on the model...
very basic clothing with dramatic lighting done in black & white. I am looking for models
